Stoneman Douglas. Never Again. Today on Stories Beyond the Headlines with Teresa Rodríguez

DALLAS (Feb. 28, 2018) – Parkland, Florida: Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the site of the recent mass shooting, reopens to students and resumes classes today. On a special episode of Stories Beyond the Headlines: Stoneman Douglas. Never Again., Teresa Rodríguez speaks with Alyssa Fletcher, a 16-year-old student from the school, and her mother, Betsy Fletcher about their experience during and after the shooting.

Alyssa, a student athlete, lost her cross-country coach, Scott Beigel, during the shooting. He died sheltering students in his classroom. Alyssa was determined to channel her emotions and honor the victims the best way she knew how: by running. To honor Coach Scott Beigel and the 16 victims, Alyssa organized a race, #RunWithCoachBeigel, which took place on Tues., Feb. 20, and had more than 1,000 runners and walkers participating in the race. Social media helped to spread the word about it and simultaneous races and individuals ran in solidarity across the U.S.

“In the aftermath of this horrific tragedy, it is admirable to see the resiliency of these students and how they are not only determined to return to a normal routine as soon as possible, but are on a mission to change laws to prevent tragedies of this magnitude from happening again,” said Rodríguez. “They are determined to raise their voices and be #StonemanStrong!”

In addition to the Fletchers’ experiences, Dr. Anabel Bejarano, a Clinical Psychologist, Assistant Professor and Program Director of Master’s Programs in Counseling at the University of Miami shares ways to cope after a tragedy of this magnitude.
