Known to millions as “Piolín” (Tweety Bird), Eduardo Sotelo is Spanish language radio’s most recognizable star and is host of the buzz-generating new nationally syndicated morning show, El Show de Piolin. His meteoric career in U.S. radio personifies a modern day cross-cultural success story.
Born in Ocotlán, Jalisco, México, Piolín left home age 16 to live with relatives in Santa Ana, California. He worked menial jobs to support himself through high school before pursuing his dream: To become a Spanish-language radio personality.
His first break came on Christmas Day 1991, when he started as a newsreader for Radio Mexico (1370 AM) in Corona, where he eventually hosted the midnight show. He then worked on-air spots at Radio Exitos (1480 AM) in Santa Ana, Radio Lazer (102.9 FM) in Oxnard and La Super “X” (99.9 FM) in Sacramento before landing at Tri Color Mexicanisima (1170 AM).
The success of Piolín’s zany yet inspirational format caught the attention of HBC which in 2002 hired Piolin for its early morning slot on LA 101.9 FM (KCSA) in Los Angeles, one of the country’s most important Hispanic regional markets. Before long, Piolín Por La Manaña dominated the ratings and was syndicated on more than 60 radio stations coast-to-coast. His guests have included President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama, actor Will Smith and legendary singer Vicente Fernández. Piolín’s popularity led to a number of television and movie appearances, including voice-overs in “Beverly Hill Chihuahua ” and “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” and a cameo role in “The Muppets Movie.”
In November 2013, Piolin was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. Previously, he was named Top Spanish Format Personality by the National Association of Broadcasters for 2006, 2008 and 2010. Such popularity translated into serious political clout when, in 2006, Piolín was credited with mobilizing the largest civil demonstrations in American history through massive rallies in Los Angeles and other major American cities on behalf of immigration reform.
After hosting his own channel on SiriusXM, “Piolin Radio”, from 2013-2014, Piolin formed his own production and syndication company, Alliance Radio Networks. In January, 2015, Piolin debuted his brand new morning show, El Show de Piolin, across more than 40 U.S. radio stations, including Entravision’s 16 stations and Bustos Media’s six stations.
On the heels of Piolin’s triumphant return to syndicated radio, he is releasing an inspirational memoir titled Speak Up!: Finding My Voice Through Hope, Strength, and Determination. The book will be published by Celebra, the Penguin Random House imprint that published Jennifer Lopez’s memoir. The book will be released on March 5 in both English and Spanish, under the title ¿A qué venimos? ¡A triunfar!: Cómo encontré mi voz entre la esperanza, la fuerza y la determinación (translation: What did we come here for? To succeed!: How I found my voice in hope, strength and determination). It features a prologue by another Celebra author, Emilio Estefan.
