On June 3, 2019, Nassón Joaquín, leader of La Luz del Mundo, was arrested on charges of pornography and sexual abuse of minors; a similar accusation to that of his father, Samuel, in 1997, when journalist Ricardo Rocha launched an investigation into the sect and discovered an exploitation scheme.
The report sparked complaints from dozens of minors abused by the “Apostle.” But the faithful preferred to protect their leaders, because for them the Joaquíns were sent by God. The authorities, close to the sect since its founding, dismissed the case.
